Behind Our Passion for Local Trees and Wood Products
Mission
At Heartwood, we like to think about trees. About planting trees, caring for trees as they grow, and keeping trees alive when they get sick. We also hope to foster in our clients a sense of connection to the trees of our city.
The idea of Heartwood Projects evolved as we thought about how to follow the path of trees after they die due to disease or human removal. About how best to use the material resources trees provide, and about how to continue to foster these connections beyond a tree's life.
Providing an avenue for people to keep their trees long after they have been removed is our guiding light. Whether it is in the home as a table or outside as a garden bed, we want our products to serve as reminders of once-loved living trees.
Project Values
Smart Resource Utilization
Over the past decade of tree care we realized that too often useful trees leave customers yards only to become wood chips or firewood. We love firewood and wood chips, but we believe city logs can actually become something better. Planter boxes for gardens increase the use of urban space for gardening and food production, nesting boxes foster migratory bird populations, and tables and benches help us all appreciate the internal wonders of nature.
Quality Construction
We are committed to using local lumber and thoughtful design to create long lasting wood products.
Prioritizing Green Lumber
We use green lumber, when suitable, for outdoor wood products. Green lumber is a lower emission lumber product as it skips the energy-intensive kiln drying process.
Collaboration
Our five-member team began collaborating on various projects around 2020. We have been pleasantly surprised at how each of us seemed committed to the same ethics in business and environmental stewardship. We look forward to shaping a combined future though positive customer interaction and innovative wood products.

We believe strong designs come through listening to our customers and adapting our knowledge and capabilities to meet the challenges of unique spaces with unique designs. Maintaining a growth mindset is our ideal.
Fostering Connections
We believe trees bring stability, wonder, and protection to our customers' lives by providing beauty, shade, and wildlife habitat. We produce work that continues connecting our customers to these attributes of trees after the trees have died.
